Larry was purchased by his owner to do eventing and had previosuly competed up to Foxhunter in the British Showjumping
Larry, a 17.2hh KWPN gelding, came to his new owner having previously competed up to Foxhunter level in showjumping. He arrived with some muscle atrophy behind the shoulders and a short, compact back that measured for a 17” saddle. Larry’s rider is 5'9" with a long femur. This meant that many off-the-shelf saddles were unsuitable — particularly those with a standard flap angle and seat size. The challenge was to find a saddle that respected Larry’s short saddle platform while offering the rider enough room and correct support.

‍After trialling several options, we found the ideal fit: a Harry Dabbs dressage saddle with a forward-cut flap and performance panel. This design kept the panel within Larry’s 17” limit, protecting his back, while giving the rider a 17.5” seat — preventing a "perched" or "armchair" position and allowing a secure, effective leg position. To support Larry’s ongoing muscle development, we fitted TreeClix to the saddle, allowing half-width adjustments without needing to replace or drastically alter the saddle. This flexibility meant we could adjust the saddle as Larry’s back changed and muscle filled in.

Over a 4-month period, with consistent saddle checks and a well-managed programme of walk-based work, Larry began to fill out through his topline. The saddle supported his movement without restriction, encouraging correct posture and muscle growth — key for keeping his back healthy. His rider also reported feeling more balanced, effective, and comfortable, with better leg position and security in the saddle. The result was a happy horse, a confident rider, and a partnership set up for long-term success — proof that thoughtful, collaborative saddle fitting really does make all the difference.
